published just a little bit more and did some of these as self - pubbed books at a lower
price range to go along with your
trad pub deals, I'll bet you could make a lot more.
Most
trad published e-books are
priced so high (often as high if not more than the printed book) that they are
pricing themselves out of the competition.

Many of my fav authors are traditionally
published — but the
trad publishers have
priced the books out of my purse so now I look for those indie gems to satisfy my reading habits.
Second, with self -
publishing, authors tend to
price their e-books lower than the
trad - publishers and those low
prices tend to earn much more money.
Trad publishing doesn't do novellas well (with certain exceptions) because the cost v.
price differential is too great, and because browsing readers look at the smaller trim size and resist it.
Pricing self -
published books under $ 5 gives them an advantage over
trad - pub books on
price, which helps make up for the disadvantage of being a relatively unknown author.

Trad - pub e-books are usually
priced close to the paperback
price (and sometimes above!).
(As an aside, I suspect if I dug into the
publishing contracts with many
trad pubbed authors, I'd find a clause that cuts their royalties to almost nothing when the selling
price of a book is greater than a 50 % discount.
The only reason
trad published authors don't is that most
trad publishers do NOT push the e-book and they
price it so high that people see more «value» in the printed version, especially the hardcover.
