Some commentators about politics and election law have recently expressed the opinion that it would be illegitimate to change the Virginia
presidential primary ballot access law between now and the March 6, 2012 presidential primary in that state.
The Democratic Party of Virginia has been opposed to the strict law
on primary ballot access, and has been in the habit of collecting signatures for all Democratic presidential candidates recognized by the party.
«The results of the GOP State Convention Gubernatorial voting represent a personal disappointment, as we did not achieve the required 15 percent of delegate support
for primary ballot access.
A party that allows petitioning for
primary ballot access may not have a later filing deadline for presidential candidates than candidates in the general primary election.
