Prior to the ruling, the California Department of Education had interpreted the state's education code to allow four ways for children to be taught at home: 1) qualify as a
private school, 2) use a certified tutor, 3) officially enroll in a
private school satellite
program, or 4) enroll in a public school's
independent study program.
Students using vouchers to attend established
private schools in Cleveland are slightly outperforming their public school counterparts in language skills and science, and doing about the same in reading, math, and social
studies, according to the latest
independent evaluation of the
program.
He has visited over 100 public and
private schools, colleges and universities to
study their environmental education and sustainability
programs and has presented more than 50 talks on green schools at National Association of
Independent Schools and California Association of
Independent Schools conferences, school association meetings, and school sites.
