Highlights of the collection include highly
prized Old Master paintings and drawings, led by Nicolas Lancret's outstanding Autumn, one of four allegories of the seasons painted during the artist's career - making commission from his patron Jean - François Leriget de la Faye (1674 - 1731).
In a Turner
prize exhibition unusually free from video or film, traditionalists will also be intrigued to discover that one of the shortlisted artists, Richard Wright, has created a
painting on one of the gallery walls using the painstaking, age -
old fresco techniques of the
old masters — drawing a cartoon, tracing it on the wall, then
painting over it and finally gilding it.
