In addition to electing new members
as vacancies occur, the Academy seeks to «foster and sustain an interest in Literature, Music, and the Fine
Arts» by administering over 70 awards and
prizes, exhibiting
art and manuscripts, funding performances
of new
works of musical theater, and purchasing artwork for donation to museums across the country.
The Maria Lassnig Foundation has announced Glasgow - based artist Cathy Wilkes
as the winner
of its new
art prize, established in June 2016 to celebrate the

Zack's

of film awards and
art prizes as: Isracard and Tel Aviv Museum Prize for Israeli Artist, Idud Hayetzira Prize — Israeli Ministry
of Culture, Adi Prize (Adi Foundation and the Israel Museum Jerusalem), Celeste Kunstpreis Berlin, Israel Lottery Council

To mark the

of Riley's
art has opened at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, including a new 20 - metre wall painting executed by assistants,
as is usual in her
work.
In his paintings, he celebrates their «affectations» and surrounds them with
prized art and design objects
of the 1920s, such
as Donald Deskey's red leather club chairs and still - lifes that suggest the
work of Bloomsbury Group painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
«I believe my task
as an artist is to make connections — to connect worlds that normally are unconnected, like
art and politics, like the experience
of the lost lives
of victims
of political violence with the experience and memories
of the viewers who approach or contemplate the
work — and I think the
prize will widen this audience,» said Salcedo.
In addition to the cash
prizes listed above; Dave Bown Projects will be buying
works of art from artists
as submissions are received.
Exceptions were a couple
of the still - ubiquitous pieced mirror -
works aimed at the selfie generation; a few overly clever installations such
as those by Josef Strau at Greene Naftali grouping the sort
of disparate objects culled from thrift stores; and, at Galeria Jaqueline Martins, Martha Araújo's — hopefully — satirical take (it won the $ 15,000 / # 9,700 Champagne Pommery
prize for most innovative stand) on our interactive
art moment, which loaned visitors a suit patched with Velcro and set them loose on an alarmingly steep Velcro - clad ramp.
As an awards exhibition, We Hereby Declare celebrates the achievements
of contemporary artists
working in Israel and whose artistic practices have been awarded
prizes by the Ministry
of Culture and Sport: Creative Encouragement Award, Young Artist Award, Design Award, Video

When he exhibited
Work No 227: The Lights Going On and Off for the 2001 Turner
prize, which he won (the other contenders were Mike Nelson, Isaac Julien and Richard Billingham: a strong year), even the
art - friendly got huffy, with reviews such
as «unfit to be considered for the
prize», «exceptionally odd», and» (has been) met with a mixture
of deep incredulity, attempts at philosophising and plain outrage».
Prouvost is wonderfully, unmistakably French, and her
work merges subjects from a challenging diversity
of cultural sources: such enlivening pluralism surely helps to make this a «British»
prize, which corresponds to the complex composition
of art as it is developed in, and in relation to contemporary British society.
The
art world watched with a mix
of admiration and envy
as the museum snagged one important
work after another —
prized paintings by Rothko, Mondrian and Magritte, 14
works by Robert Rauchenberg and 22 by Ellsworth Kelly purchased from the artists» personal holdings.
The
prize awards more than $ 85,000 directly to artists
working in photography each year, and is comprised
of an annual exhibition at the
Art Gallery
of Ontario (AGO), an online exhibition at AimiaAGOPhotographyPrize.com, international artist residencies, public programming,
as well
as an extensive national scholarship program.
She studied at Folkestone and Dover School
of Art (1952 - 6) and the Royal College
of Art, London (1979 - 81) and now, in her early eighties, is enjoying renewed interest in her
work in the UK and internationally with recent exhibitions at the Jerwood, Hastings (2012) and Tate Britain (BP Spotlight, 2013),
