In fact, Andrew

Single mothers report more depression and psychological
problems than married mothers and undoubtedly function less well as parents as a result.9 Cohabiting mothers have also been found to suffer more from depression than married mothers, which again would directly interfere with their ability to
display good parenting skills.10 It is important to note that these differences may be the result of these mothers» living situation or may reflect pre-existing differences between the types of women who have
children out of wedlock rather than in marriage (as we discuss in the section on selection below).11
A simple way to identify a skill is to first identify the
problem behavior and then identify the behavior you'd like the
child to
display.
As a result, they tend to spend more time onlooking (watching other
children without joining) and hovering on the edge of social groups.8, 11 There is some evidence to suggest that young depressive
children also experience social impairment.12 For example,
children who
display greater depressive symptoms are more likely to be rejected by peers.10 Moreover, deficits in social skills (e.g., social participation, leadership) and peer victimization predict depressive symptoms in childhood.13, 14 There is also substantial longitudinal evidence linking social withdrawal in childhood with the later development of more significant internalizing
problems.15, 16,17 For example, Katz and colleagues18 followed over 700
children from early childhood to young adulthood and described a pathway linking social withdrawal at age 5 years — to social difficulties with peers at age 15 years — to diagnoses of depression at age 20 years.
Results from a growing number of studies suggest that young
children prone to internalizing
problems display characteristic socially - withdrawn behaviours amongst peers.7 That is, when faced with opportunities for social interaction, be it at preschool, playgroup, or on the playground, anxious and depressive
children tend to keep to themselves, refrain from talking, and rarely initiate social exchanges with other
children.
The peer group is also a common setting for young
children to
display early signs of internalizing
problems, such as anxiety and depression.
Jensen said part of the
problem is that parents don't always recognize when the threats or behaviors their
children display aren't normal.
The friendships of anxious or depressed
children also tend to be less frequent, of poorer quality, and with
children who also
display internalizing
problems, which can worsen existing
problems.
Their
children tend to
display more behavioural
problems and less prosocial behaviour than
children born to mothers with higher family incomes.1 - 13 To what extent and in what ways income differences may be the cause of
children's behavioural
problems are therefore crucial research and policy questions.
Children with actively involved fathers
display less behavior
problems in school.
Arroyo and Eth (1996) have similarly observed contrasting symptom profiles between Latin American and South East Asian refugee
children, where the former
display more prevalent academic and conduct
problems.
Most important, in research with somewhat older
children, mothers who provide more emotionally expressive and explanatory narratives of aversive experiences with their 8 - to 12 - year - old
children have
children who
display better coping skills, and fewer internalizing and externalizing behavior
problems (Fivush & Sales, 2006; Sales & Fivush, 2005).
Research shows that focused training in social
problem - solving, anger management, moral reasoning and perspective - taking can make a significant difference both with
children displaying early signs of delinquency and with youth already incarcerated for serious offences.
A small number of secondary prevention programs for fathers of young

First, many studies have shown that parents
display dysfunctional parenting with their own
child diagnosed with behavior
problems, but
display functional parenting when coupled with a
child from another parent similarly diagnosed with behavior
problems (e.g., Dumas 2005).
Parents of
children displaying disobedience, aggression, shyness, tantrums, and the whole spectrum of childhood behavior
problems
Not only do parents of
children with executive functioning - related mental disorders
display poorer executive function and mindful awareness themselves, there are also indications that attention and impulsivity
problems in parents negatively affect the effects of parent training.
At times, a
child will
display problem behavior in order to get their parents or siblings attention.
