The syndrome refers to a group of conditions that include poor growth for the baby both in the womb and after birth, and mental, physical and developmental problems for the child that can last through adulthood, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Just as lack of Vitamin D and poor calcium absorption can cause malformation of the bones of the legs (as in the case of Rickets), it can cause the jawbone to form poorly, resulting in spacing problems for the teeth and braces for the child.

The growing number of children who bring to the classroom an array of social problems — from the stresses of poor or broken homes to a lack of adequate motivation or language proficiency — represent the greatest obstacle they face, the principals reported in an informal poll taken here last week.

It's no secret that «regular» schools serving predominantly poor children, who face overwhelming challenges that affluent children never have to confront, have more than their share of behavior problems.
