Other causes for hair loss in cats can show very similar symptoms, and often the cat has more
problems than a food allergy alone.

Up until that point, I had thought of peanut
allergies as a faraway dilemma for which I saw more of the precautions
than the
problem: strict bans on school grounds; warnings on
food packaging; pretzels on airplanes.
Substantive research already exists showing nut free schools (not early childhood, but mid elementary onwards) actually do more harm
than good, to the extent that the official anaphylaxis prevention guidelines have been updated by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and
Allergy to explicitly state that
food bans in upper primary and high schools do not work, and can actually cause
problems.
There are
foods that cause
problems with
allergies more
than others, like milk and eggs.
Chronic illness is on the rise, now more
than ever before; a staggering number of Americans — about half — have now been diagnosed with recurrent health conditions like asthma, diabetes,
food allergies, thyroid imbalances, gastrointestinal
problems, Lyme disease, autoimmune disorders... the list goes on.
Recurrent or chronic ear infections are more commonly seen in dogs with
food allergies than in dogs with other types of
allergies — also, very young dogs suffering from severe skin
problems are often victims of
food allergies.
While many of these
foods work out more expensive
than cheaper supermarket brands the reduction in vet's bills is a welcome bonus if your dog suffers from digestive
problems or
allergies.
(Note that one source suggests that cats have more
problems with
food allergies than dogs, but every other veterinary source consulted states that dogs have more
problems with
food allergies than cats.)
That some people and cats and dogs have more systemic health
problems associated with
food sensitivity / intolerance and
allergy than others eating similar
foods points to genetic, epigenetic, home environment and lifestyle differences.
But due to the fact that many other
problems can cause similar symptoms and that many times animals are suffering from more
problems than just
food allergies, it is very important that all other
problems are properly identified and treated prior to undergoing diagnosis for
food allergies.
