Two other projects are afoot in the middle of the country, including one that is already
producing renewable diesel that can be blended into jet fuel at a ratio of one part in 10 as soon as ASTM gives the green light.
The Commission notes, however, that biodiesel is generally «compatible with existing distribution infrastructure» and outlines the potential of a newer process («thermal depolymerization») that
produces renewable diesel without the above disadvantages, from «animal offal, agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, sewage, and old tires».
The partners have already started a joint development of the engineering design for a 1,400 barrel per day BTL plant to
produce renewable diesel and jet fuels from woody biomass.
We've written about the progress of biofuels company LS9 and their quest to
produce a renewable diesel fuel from engineered E.coli for the past three years.

renewable energy — can now compete for the transportation dollar.
In addition to the
renewable diesel (green
diesel) the process
produces a liquid petroleum gas vapor stream (LPG vapor); a liquid petroleum liquid stream (naphtha LPG); a purge gas stream; and a waste steam stream.
The Guardian, March 14, 2016: EU green transport target «may have increased greenhouse gas emissions»: «European Union
renewable energy targets may have increased greenhouse gas emissions because the dirtiest biofuels
produce three times the emissions of
diesel oil, according to the most complete EU analysis yet carried out.
The proposed changes included revising registration, recordkeeping and reporting provisions for compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas; a lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions analysis for
renewable electricity,
renewable diesel and naphtha
produced from landfill biogas; changes to deal with issues related to crop residue and corn kernel fiber when determining volumes of cellulosic feedstocks; a lifecycle analysis of advanced butanol; and changes to the E15 misfueling mitigation regulations.
Because most
renewable diesel and bio-jet
produced today are made from the same oils and fats as biodiesel, the same limitations on the scale of these resources apply.

«According to the EPA's
Renewable Fuel Standards Program Regulatory Impact Analysis, released in February 2010, biodiesel from soy oil results, on average, in a 57 % reduction in greenhouse gases compared to fossil
diesel, and biodiesel
produced from waste grease results in an 86 % reduction»
