The Sterkfontein Caves are a series of limestone caves 50 kilometres north west of Johannesburg that are not only the richest, but most
productive palaeo - anthropological sites in the world.
«It used to be just a pat answer that you could not get dense settlements of people living in complex social organisations without this
productive crop,» says Deborah Pearsall, a
palaeo - ethnobotanist at the University of Missouri.
