of specific types
of supplements.
But when these buyers come across a booth with natural
pet toys, she says, they think, «Wow, there's a whole bunch
of natural
products out here that I never thought
of, so let's explore all
of the categories within the natural space.»
Store personnel need to be able to steer the
pet parent in the right direction and use resources from manufacturers like signage,
product packaging, a website and videos to help take the anxiety
out of the selection process.
Michelle Schell, director
of marketing for Long Beach, Calif. - based Redbarn
Pet Products, pointed
out that
pet owners — and thus retailers — are more discerning than ever.
Assuming this is how the next round
of consolidation plays
out, the resulting homogenization
of pet retail could reverberate throughout the industry, depressing diversity and even outright killing certain
product categories that do not necessarily serve the profit - generating needs
of private - equity investors.
This ongoing trend towards the humanization
of pets is compelling owners to seek
out products with ingredients they know are safe and can recognize, explains Jones.
«We are always seeking
out new and innovative
pet products to keep our store fresh and ahead
of the competition,» Lewis explains.
