is fairly sceptical, an

is a great deal more to learn in order to keep up with the

Here
's a little insight from the medical
profession on COX: «The

Recently, naturopathic medicine has
been in the spotlight in Ontario, with

Incremental cultural change The relentlessly negative focus
on teacher stress drives new graduates into other
professions, exacerbating the localised teacher shortages which already exist and which
are increasing, particularly in the South East.
The National Union of Teachers said that the Government should focus
on issues such as insufficient school places, a drop in the number of applicants for teaching and fact that the number of teachers leaving the
profession each year
is at a 10 - year high and has
increased by 25 per cent since 2010.
Sarah Shad Johnson, a parent of children in Charleston County Schools and co-founder of Community Voice, says, «The timing of Secretary Duncan's visit comes at a critical time when our state legislators
are discussing whether or not to support the adversarial Common Core State Standards, as well as bills regarding school choice, charter school expansion, and tax credits for private schools; our State Superintendent of Education seems to
be embracing a controversial stand
on the teaching
profession; and the focus here in Charleston County appears to
be only
on experimental, questionable, and expensive initiatives, as opposed to goals of
increased learning opportunities.»
Increased accountability can
be beneficial for the special needs population if public school IEP team members heed the voice of reason, employ the sensibilities of the special education
profession, remember and reflect
on why they became special educators, and exercise humanity by listening to the people who know students best, parents.
The School Teachers Review Body, which advises the government
on teacher pay, has warned in the past that although larger
increases are needed to keep the
profession competitive, schools do not currently have the money to award much larger rises.
But given the disparities that exist — particularly in potential teachers» performance
on standardized tests — it
is still important to
be cautious about
increasing cut scores for various entry points into the
profession.
Despite what the lack of action
on this issue suggests, however, there
is widespread public support for
increasing the selectivity of teacher preparation programs: 60 percent of Americans believe that preparation programs should make their entrance requirements more rigorous.11 While there has
been some recent evidence of a shift, the average SAT scores of college students pursuing education degrees have historically
been lower than those of students entering other
professions.12
The gap between official statistics and the perceptions of the
profession seems vast; school leaders across the country report that they
are struggling to fill vacancies with suitably qualified permanent staff, right at the time when they face
increasing numbers of pupils, higher accountability standards and more demands
on subject specialisms.
But the Department for Education said: «It
is completely misleading to suggest there
are chronic shortages of teachers or that a record number of teachers have «quit» the
profession - our
increased spending
on supply teachers simply reflects our
increased total spending in response to rising pupil numbers.
The next remit to the Review Body must allow them to make the recommendations
on pay that they believe
are needed to ensure that teaching remains an attractive
profession and can recruit and retain sufficient staff to
be able to teach the
increasing numbers of pupils that have
been forecast.
The Education Corps
is designed to provide tutoring and after - school support but not necessarily to train future teachers.92 The VISTA program matches corps members with a nonprofit organization to perform capacity building and provides yearlong stipends, but it
is not intended for provision of direct services.93 The Professional Corps, which specifies teaching as one of its qualified positions, allows participants to access Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards — which recipients can use either for loan forgiveness or for paying tuition and other qualifying educational expenses — but
increases residency program costs because residents
are prohibited from receiving stipends through AmeriCorps and must therefore
be paid through their program or the school district.94 None of these programs
were designed for supported entry specifically; thus, programs dedicated to providing a gradual
on - ramp to the teaching
profession can sometimes find it hard to meet their definitions and requirements.
While I
am sure we can all debate the many reasons teachers offer for leaving the
profession including
increased emphasis
on standardized test scores, the shifting focus of the annual professional performance review and the lack of funding for education at the state and national level, there
is a growing stream of awareness that the core of the frustration
is the lack of shared decision - making roles and opportunities for teachers in the majority of our schools today.
If this pattern
is replicated in the proportion of teachers actually leaving the
profession, this has the potential to place further pressure
on the teaching workforce at a time when the EBacc, and rising pupil numbers,
are both
increasing the need for teachers in these subjects.
As the world gets smaller through ease of transportation and
increased technological connection, the health
professions strive to
be on the forefront of disease prevention and detection.
On the flip side, our
profession is also facing many challenges, such as the
increase of pet owner expectations,
increase in the competition, corporate consolidation, advanced technology, student loan debt, and work - life balance issues.
When people
are able to experience animals first hand, their appreciation and concern for them
increase, often igniting lifelong interests, avocations and
professions focused
on improving animal wellbeing.
Fortunately, while there
are many things that we within the
profession can
be doing (and, in an
increasing number of cases,
are doing), there
are also some simple things that you can
be doing with your pets at home, both
on a regular basis and immediately prior to and during a veterinary visit, to help ensure as peaceful an experience as possible... for everyone involved.
The recent Law Society of BC Report
on the Retention of Women in Law Task Force notes as follows: • Women have
been entering the legal
profession in BC in numbers equal to or greater than men for more than a decade, yet represent only about 34 % of all practicing lawyers in the province and only about 29 % of lawyers in full - time private practice; and • the legal
profession in BC
is aging and there will
be a net reduction in the number of practicing lawyers — a looming shortage — as older lawyers retire without a corresponding
increase in younger lawyers joining the
profession.
I realize that civility in the legal
profession is on the decline (perhaps another reason for
increased lawyer depression, described in the last post).
Unless those Ph.D.
s come to law teaching with respect for law'
s special expertise — and with new ideas for how to integrate their social science backgrounds into the world of law as it
is experienced
on the ground — then the move toward legal empiricism will only
increase the unfortunate rift between tenured law faculties and the rest of the legal
profession.22
A notable example
was the
increase of women in traditionally male - dominated
professions and an emphasis
on addressing workplace sexual harassment.
Traditional paths to practice
are narrowing, competitive forces
on the
profession are increasing, and clients
are demanding new types of services and service experiences.
The bulk of the proposed revisions
are derived from changes to the ABA Model Rules based
on the recommendations of the ABA's Ethics 2000 Commission and its more recent Commission
on Ethics 20/20, which specifically looked at globalization and the
profession's
increased use of technology.
The same pressure to
increase efficiencies and show ever improving value
is being focused
on the private practice legal
profession with an intensity never before experienced.
«While this
is a victory for us there
is still mounting concern about the inaccessibility for some to enter the
profession given what we
are seeing in
increase, licensing application fees, sky - rocketing tuition and other
increased fees, so while we
are very happy with the reversal
on this initiative, this
is a drop in the bucket.»
While it
is easy for the law school administrations and academics to preach about their obligation to open up the
profession and admit more students so as to avoid a monopoly in the
profession the real reason for the decision to
increase enrollment, at the University of Ottawa in particular, but I would suggest at each of the law schools in the province, has
been a purely selfish financial one
on behalf of the law schools and their faculty members.
There
are a number of trends currently facing the legal
profession (
increased client sophistication, fee pressures, stagnant growth, the number of lawyers growing at a faster rate than the general population, succession planning needs and an
increased emphasis
on non-traditional skills — see the CBA Futures Report for a more fulsome list) that make the traditional practice model difficult (impossible?)
(i) BMO reducing its roster of firms from about 800 to 200 with further reductions planned; (ii) the clients of seven sister firms hiring me to help them get control over their legal spend and forge stronger and more value based relationships with their firms; (iii) the many small and mid-sized businesses who hire accountants to do all of their tax and structuring work because it
is cheaper than dealing with lawyers; (iv) firms hiring me to help them figure out how to budget, set and meet client expectations without losing money; (v) «clients» who never become clients at all as they do their own legal work based
on precedents that friends share with them; (vi) the various forms of outsourcing that
are now prevalent (from offices in India to Tory's office in Halifax); (vii) clients hiring me to figure out how to
increase internal capacity without
increasing headcount in order to reduce external spend; (viii) the success of firms like Conduit, SkyLaw and Cognition (to name a few) who
are taking new approaches to «big» and «medium law» work; (ix) the introduction of full time project managers in many firms; and (x) the number of lawyers throughout the
profession who regularly don't docket chunks of their time in order to avoid unpleasant fee conversations with their clients.
Although the records management (RM)
profession is facing challenges with an
increasing focus
on information governance, the reality if that its role and function has
been in great need for more than 30 years and remains a necessity today.
«As an association representing the legal
profession, we
are pleased that state policymakers recognized that providing indigent defense services
is a societal obligation that should
be paid for out of the state's General Fund and rejected a proposal to partly pay for those services with a $ 50
increase in the biennial attorney registration fee, which would have

is worth noting that the traditional division of labour between the two sides of the

be less and less pronounced, as law firms take
on increasing prosecution dockets and attorneys hire solicitors to build their litigation offerings.
Then there
are all the pressures from outside the legal
profession to
increase access to justice and bring the legal system within reach of the man
on the Clapham Omnibus.
ECEs have continued to advance their
profession through
increased levels of professional preparation and
on - going professional learning, as well as
being regulated by the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators.
