Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, attacks
muscle - controlling nerve cells — motor neurons — in the brain, brainstem and spinal cord, leading to
progressive weakness and eventual paralysis of
muscles throughout the body.
