The event's main sponsor is Pfizer / Wyeth, which is in the process of being taken over by Nestlé, and it uses the awards to
promote its SMA brand of formula by calling them the SMA Know - How Maternity and Infant Awards.
Nestlé's underlying purpose of targeting doulas with events on water birth is to
promote its SMA brand.
Nestlé's event was ostensibly about «food hypersensitivity management in infants and pre-school children», but is part of its strategy to
promote the SMA brand in general, and its new SMA HA formula in particular.
When Nestlé runs mass media advertising campaigns, targets parents with baby clubs or throws a promotional event for health workers at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London to encourage them to
promote SMA — who pays for it?
In 2015, Nestle took to the streets to
promote the SMA brand, such as at the Leicester Mela, where health campaigners were on hand to provide information on the rulings against Nestle's misleading claims and its violations of marketing requirements (picture at top of page).

In another strategy to bypass the restrictions on advertising its formula to the public, Nestle has recruited parenting bloggers to
promote the SMA brand.
(For example, a street stall and play area used to
promote SMA formula and its Cerelac baby food in Leicester in 2015).
Press release 22 June 2012 Wyeth has cancelled its much
promoted SMA Baby Know How roadshow after shopping centres pulled out of the event.
In more recent developments, Nestle has
promoted the SMA brand with street stalls.
Nestlé, which completed its takeover of the SMA brand in December 2012, returned to a similar strategy in 2015, with street stalls
promoting the SMA brand.

For example, Tesco has
promoted SMA infant formula in its catalogue with the idealising claim that it has the «healthiest nutrients» (left).
It has stepped up direct targeting of parents, for example with street stalls
promoting the SMA brand (left, Baby Milk Action supporters distributed leaflets alongside a Nestlé stall in Leicester highlighting misleading claims made in its promotional materials).
23 July 2015: Nestlé is
promoting its SMA infant formula brand in the UK through sponsorship of the AOL Being Mum online video series.
Tesco did exactly the same in September 2011, when
it promoted SMA formula with a «Big Price Drop» campaign (below).
Nestlé
promoted its SMA brand of formula at the conference of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in April 2016.
Nestlé is also
promoting the SMA brand through events with other organisations, as in the example below for an event with a reflux charity on 30 November:
During the registration period, Nestlé generally provides a buffet and
promotes SMA products on a stand, as well as during the event.
We have been contacted by supporters concerned that Nestlé is
promoting its SMA infant formula brand to mothers through sponsorship of AOL's online Being Mum videos.
The ASA rejected complaints that the advertising
promoted the SMA brand used for the entire range of formula, including infant formula.

And it has partnered with parenting bloggers, who direct pregnant women and new mothers to the «
SMA Mums» website for information on diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding — the website

SMA - branded video on protein and is working with parenting bloggers to
promote it and drive traffic to its
SMA Mums website, where the new
SMA PRO infant formula is
promoted.
Nestle recruited a network of Clinical Representatives to
promote relaunched
SMA products to health workers.
Health workers have to register via an
SMA branded website if they wish to attend, where the products are
promoted.
