NFER reports that the distribution of schools falling below floor standards does not reveal any clear patterns that would explain why some RSCs have a higher
proportion of sponsored academies than others, but it does posit that potential reason could be a lack of suitable sponsors willing to take on underperforming schools.
NFER also found wide variation in
the proportion of sponsored academies across regions.

Ofsted's annual report shows more than a third
of sponsored academies, both primary and secondary, are currently rated as requiring improvement, a higher
proportion than local authority schools.
Moreover, the
proportion of academy chains returning above average levels
of attainment for disadvantaged students in
sponsored secondary
academies has fallen since 2013 with only a small minority
of chains showing steady improvement.
