If you put a rectangular neutral - density filter, such as dark glasses, on a
sheet of white
paper, the filter allows only a certain
proportion of light through — say, 50 percent.
I enlarged it and printed it on a
sheet of paper — that way, it was able to serve as a prototype, helping to match colors and maintain the right
proportions.
