I'm a bit scared that the next step will be automated conversion of PDF into
proprietary kindle formats with expiration and DRM so you don't keep readings beyond the class ending, can't save them, etc..

Kindles can only read their own
proprietary format.
I've never used a Kindle, but it appears that the only problem here is that that
Kindles only work with their
proprietary format.
For instance, Amazon's
Kindles do not support EPUB without first being converted whereas Apple's iPad does not directly welcome Amazon's
proprietary format, AZW / MOBI / KF8.

format, NOT JUST
KINDLE's
proprietary format which is available only to
Kindle purchasers.
