True, Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the Surgeon General,
did apologize, in a manner of speaking, for her
public assertion that the Catholic Church is indifferent to human suffering except when it comes to the unborn.
They
do so partly by tempering the ways in which we think about
assertions that frequent the
public realm.

It is troubling when individual works or entire movements are hidden from
public view (in some cases for decades), accompanied by denials or implied denials, or by indifference, of the existence of those works; and
assertions that imply those works don't exist.
This attack on science and scientists is so serious that all scientist should be disassociating themselves from you unless and until you make a clear
public statement that you
did not intend to assert to scientists «Say what you feel, not what you can prove» and that you completely and unequivocally reject that
assertion.
Contrary to Gordon's
assertion, I
do not think that having two separate societies has enabled the protection of the
public interest; in practice it has more often meant there are two guardians of lawyer privilege rather than just one.
