A common refrain I hear in the course of my reporting and writing about
school vouchers — a

The only real solution to the problem is to utterly eliminate the Milwaukee Parental Choice
Program and return to
public control of
public money spent in
public schools with
public accountability.
These included a strong vision of and value for
public education in which almost Finnish children participate as the creator of Finland's future society; resulting high status for the country's teaching profession whose members are stringently selected through rigorous university - based teacher education
programs that confer Masters degrees on all of them; a widespread culture of collaboration in curriculum development among teachers in each
school district; an equally robust culture of collaboration among all partners in strong local municipalities where most curriculum and other policy decisions are made; and a system of widespread cooperation and trust instead of US - style test - based
accountability.
Conversely, transparency and
accountability is something we don't have for our our nascent
school voucher
program, which is scheduled to shift up to $ 1 billion in taxpayer dollars over the next ten years to private
schools that are not required to adhere to any curricular standards or assess students in a way that is comparable to
public schools.
Critics of the publicly - funded vouchers say the
program — a favorite of
school choice advocates — would spend millions in state dollars over the next decade on primarily religious private
schools exempted from many of the
accountability and anti-discrimination measures imposed on traditional
public schools.
