Widespread teacher layoffs, larger class sizes and increased economic hardship for children are among the impacts California's
budget crisis and the recession have had on
public schools and students, according to a
report released Thursday.
Meanwhile,
public education in Wisconsin has suffered some of the largest
budget cuts in the nation, with the LFB
reporting that K - 12
public school funding has been cut by just over $ 1 billion when compared to funding levels in the 2010 - 11
school year, before Walker and Republicans took control of state government.
A new
report from The Alliance for Quality Education, Education Law Center and the
Public Policy and Education Fund finds that the state's 2016
budget underfunds 81 percent of high needs
schools in New York, including in 30 of the 33 districts serving high numbers of students of color.
In 2014, New York City's
budget office released a
report making the claim that attrition among charter
schools of special education students was higher than their district
public school counterparts.
The DCPS funding formula does differentiate
public funding based on the number of students at each grade level and in different special needs categories, including special education, English language learners, and those «at risk» for academic failure.38 DCPS would not disclose how or if it factors in parental donations when determining
school budgets or allocations.39 However, it did
report not having a policy to equitably redistribute parent donations or to prohibit these additional dollars from being put toward staffing.40
The following year, however, the city's Independent
Budget Office released another
report that overturned the previous
report's findings, indicating that children with disabilities stayed at charter
schools at a slightly higher rate than they did at traditional
public schools.
The Legislature has yet to introduce a bill that would bring private voucher
schools into the state's
public school accountability system, though the
budget requires those
schools to receive
report cards a year after linking to the state's student information system.
In a two - part policy
report, Partnership for Learning partnered with
Public Impact to assess the state of
school finance in Washington and explore the benefits student - based
budgeting (SBB) could have for the state.
Although
public schools may still feel the repercussions from the 2008 recession, federal data showed a significant upsurge in state and local education spending in the 2014 - 15
school year — an increase that, if it persists, could eventually restore four earlier years of deep
budget cuts, according to an analysis by The Hechinger
Report.
