Publishing should be a collaboration between
authors and their smartest readers — and at some
point the distinction should become meaningless.
Case in

publish - minded
authors on a budget.
As we wrote at the time, this example makes the

authors already have a lot of the tools for marketing their work, and in some cases — as with Hocking, Locke and other self - publishers such as J.A. Konrath — this can make them so self - sufficient that they no longer need the support of a traditional
publishing deal.
The saddest issue in this controversy is the argument that profanity in
published books is a fact and that readers should have to simply put up with it because that's how the
author wrote it; the

I only
point this out because a professional
author — such as yourself — would never
publish anything with so many mistakes in it, of course, knowing it would appear to be absolute bollix, so you must have intended to appear utterly inept at the craft you propose to be so knowledgeable about, right?
Especially not when you consider that classic
authors such as Twain, Poe, King and Dickens all went through the self
publishing route at one
point or another and considering that many people, both through traditional
publishing methods and non-traditional ones can struggle to «make a living» through their work.
And finally I notice that over and over people have
pointed out that big five
published authors usually don't make enough to support themselves.
I can
point to traditionally
published «
authors» who make their own living, and to send you to writing classes, who should join you there!
Some articles make it sound like legacy publishers want to slap warning stickers on indie
published books,
point at the
authors and shout «UNCLEAN!
As UK
authors aren't legally bound to stay quiet, several
authors told The Guardian how small their actual book earnings were under the traditional
publishing model, which led Solomon to make the
point that the traditional industry is not working in
authors» best interests.
As numerous
authors and publishers have
pointed out, there's no such thing as too many books being
published, or not enough readers for the volume of content.
If anything, more self -
published authors are earning enough to make a living with their craft (see
point 1).
While self -
published book prices have been slowly rising on average, devoted fans of an
author are more likely to pay $ 4.99 US or more for a new title, whereas
authors who don't have an established readership or who haven't produced a multi-title series may not attract readers at that price
point.
There are many great and experienced editors in traditional
publishing who can help a book become better for the
author, but at this
point, with traditional
publishing in the state it's in, I'll take my chances on a couple of friends reading the book.
However, at this
point, most prize - winning books have been traditionally
published, and many literary prizes aren't even open to indie
authors.
The
point of this article isn't to criticize the small indie press houses, rather it is to present vital issues that
authors must know when making the decision to self -
publish or not.
