I'm back today to share my journey into self - publishing, and as I did with traditional publishing, to offer some tips for making your self -
publishing experience go smoothly.

I absolutely think Howey is just trying to make this more of his «us vs them» spiel, because the only people he's responding to are people who agree with him, he is busy pushing himself over people who were actually THERE and
experienced it with his own agenda, and basically there is a whole lot of entitlement
going on for the self - proclaimed spokesman of self -
publishing.
Their
experience and education with the
publishing industry seemed to make it clear that
going indie was the only logical choice — the traditional
publishing model didn't make sense anymore.

It pairs you with an internationally -
experienced publishing expert to help you
publish without the hassles, headaches and mistakes of
going it completely alone.
It is not
going to be
published or even shown to your critique group, which makes for a liberating
experience.
I've
gone the traditional
publishing route with my debut UF, and have loved the
experience so far.
Experienced authors will not sign a contract with a non-compete clause, and publishers aren't
going to promise not to
publish books that compete directly with the author's, so it's just a bad deal.
Note: In my
experience, it takes me less time to indie
publish a short story than it does to look up a market, get the manuscript ready, do a cover letter, do stamps and SASE, and
go to the post office to mail it.
I understand why you'd be wary to sign with another publisher because of your
experience, but there are so many others out there who have had amazing
experiences with their small publishers that it's a shame if you discourage everyone from signing with a publisher and only
going the self -
publishing route.
It's hard to figure out which self -
publishing distribution service one is right for you — and if it's
going to provide the best customer
experience.
I'm happy self -
publishing, but
going to some writing conferences this summer I've been tempted to pitch my books to agents, just for the
experience (and, who knows what could happen?)
We
experienced this issue first - hand when this newly
published book, distributed through Lightning Source,
went out of stock the day it was released.
And I think all Traditionally
published authors have
gone through that
experience.
If you are
going to
go into the
publishing business, it helps to have
experience in
publishing.
While it's mainly intended to be a long tail product, the primary goal for which was to
go through the digital self -
publishing process and get some first - hand
experience, it would be nice to see my «platform» have a slightly better conversion rate!
So if you are accepted by an agent, it's probably almost good enough to self
publish anyway, and while they will pick up a lot of small things, and streamline you work, you're probably not
going to have the same life changing learning
experience that a «young» writer would have.
Howey
went on to expand on his fear that the current climate of self -
publishing will continue to perpetuate the model that traditional
publishing has always
experienced, namely that there will be a limited number of bestselling and successful authors at the top, followed by the remaining «unknowns.»
My
experience from writing novels is that you never stop learning and the same
goes for the self -
publishing process.
I would add on the side of traditional
publishing that 1) It is easier to get national publicity because producers give more weight to a traditionally
published book, particularly from a larger house (though some self -
published authors certainly do get national publicity as well — it's just harder, in general and 2) a traditional publisher is generally
going to bring a great deal of
experience to the table — from improving the cover or title to layout and design.
Other designers, authors, and
publishing houses who see this in person are just
going to think that I didn't know what I was doing, while some may know exactly what happened because they've
experienced the same thing.
But a self -
publishing mentor — someone who's
gone through the process successfully and, preferably, repeatedly — can offer you the benefit of his or her
experience by giving you advice and pointing you in the right direction.
Her war stories,
experiences, and her take on where
publishing is
going were fascinating.

experiences as a blogger, a self -
published author, and now as a 2x traditionally -

Having
experienced publishing from both the traditional and indie route, we can safely say that the more edits a manuscript
goes through, the better chance it'll truly be polished and its best.
There are also a growing number of reputable and reliable freelance editing and critique services that enable a self -
publishing author to
go that route with
experienced and knowledeable editing and proof - reading.

If you have the same
experience I have just had, you're
going to get a tremendous amount of satisfaction the moment you are able to look at your story, say to yourself «it's done» and
publish.

experience, plus conversations with thousands of aspiring and accomplished authors, I have identified seven key things writers need if they are
going to reach their
publishing goals.
One of the most frustrating things publicists can
experience is when a book
publishes and the author
goes on vacation right around that time and is unavailable for interview — your team can't do the heavy lifting without you.
