are controversial and can't find a traditional
deal, or,
did not care to wait years to
publish, an opportunity to share their work and get paid more equitably for it.
I have read wonderful self
published books, some of which have
been optioned for tv and movie
deals, they didn't start out at that level, they worked up to it by self marketing.
In the end, this certainly isn't the biggest book
deal in
publishing but it
does give John security in order to write books and know where his next paycheck
is coming from.

'm guessing that a lot of authors
are not aware that even if they
do not have an agent to represent them when
dealing with a
publishing contract they can always hire the services of an Intellectual Properties lawyer.
These opinions
are so strong, in fact, that some hopeful authors have opted to not pursue book
publishing because they don't want to blog or
be a public speaker or
deal with the insanity that
is Twitter.
If you
are lucky enough to get a
publishing deal, the publisher will take your book, edit it, print out a large run, and
do their best to sell it.
In 2013, shortly after I got Faerie Blood «
s current edition out into the world and as I
was trying to
deal with both my Carina work and getting Bone Walker out, I
was doing a series of blog posts pertaining to how to self -
publish your work.
Not only
do I want the editing services and help with publicity that could come with a publisher
deal, but I want the validation that my book
is good enough to
be published.
Traditional
publishing is alluring, but don't waste time waiting on a lucrative
deal.
If it
's possible to get an agent and a
publishing deal when your self -
published book or books
did not sell well.
I
am not (yet anyway an author but I
do have a Masters in Finance and when I turned down a
publishing deal (yes I
did) I also came at the issue with spreadsheets and assumptions about future cash flows.
By the way, it
's unlikely a traditional
publishing company will allow you to
do this unless you manage to negotiate it into your book
deal contract (the publisher gets the majority of the rights — a frustrating down side).

Publishing took a Traditional
deal once it
was offered to them.
This doesn't necessarily mean it
's a bad
deal:
publishing services cost a lot of money.

A year ago, I don't think anybody would have predicted that Janklow and Nesbitt
were going to make a
deal to self -
publish books of their best authors whose books
were out of print or who wanted to make more money on their royalties.
I made up my mind that my success as a self -
published author
was a
done deal, that it
was non-negotiable and I would settle for nothing less.
Even if you get a traditional
publishing deal, the days of big advances for first time writers
are largely gone (unless you
are extremely lucky), and you will still
be expected to
do a significant amount of marketing work on your own.

publishing program, which at first I thought
was them taking a page from the music industry's post-Napster «360
deals «-- but no; on sober second thought it has nothing to
do with those except for name.
