What authors are
experiencing right now in the self
publishing arena sort of reminds me of the recent housing bubble.
But a solid, but small independent publisher (
what we call an indie) can provide
experience, advice, and an imprint that will enable you to submit your book to any reviewer or award committee, which is not always the case with truly self -
published titles.
The truth has always been that most trad
published books are damp squibs (speaking from
experience), but self -
publishing has allowed authors to give readers
what they want to read instead of
what agents and publishers think they want to read.
There are a number of models, and in my
experience what sets them apart from vanity presses is that they're run like
publishing companies.
When
publishing experts are asked, «well
what about fiction writers,» the answer is usually, «um, I don't have
experience with that, but it should work too.»
Having now run the gamut from being self -
published to co-
published to traditionally
published and now back again to self -
published, I can't say enough
what a joyful and rewarding
experience it's been to once again have full control of my work.
