to secondary programmes is becoming increasingly challenging, and will become more so as
pupil numbers
go up.

universities each year, just 1.5 % of the 80,000
pupils eligible each year for Free School Meals in secondary schools.
However,
pupils from more affluent backgrounds are less likely
to go to university if they do the four - week holiday course, with a 10 percentage point drop in girls and 8 point drop for boys.

As many as 2,500 schools, 300 colleges and 100
universities have been involved in the Aimhigher scheme, which attempts
to encourage teenagers or primary school
pupils from less - advantaged backgrounds
to go to university.
«With basic needs not met, these under - resourced schools face an upward struggle in supporting their
pupils in the matriculation exams which allow you
to go to university in South Africa.»
And in general,
pupils from private schools were 22 times more likely
to go to a top
university than those who had been on free school meals, the Trust said.
There's
going to be ample opportunity for enrichment activities at the
University of Birmingham school, with teachers being paid more — the figure is yet
to be finalise —
to give every
pupil five hours of enrichment each week.

to do incredible things, with some graduating
university to become a teacher through Teach First.
And we know that disadvantaged
pupils from grammar schools are almost twice as likely
to go to a top Russell Group
university as those from more affluent comprehensive schools.
For example, among schools where
pupils achieved an average of 801 - 850 A-level points each (900 is equivalent
to three A grades), 26 % of the comprehensive school
pupils went on
to the selective
universities, compared with 45 % of the independent school
pupils.
Its table shows, by individual school, what percentage of
pupils went forward into higher education in general, and what percentage
went to a list of 30
universities the charity considers «highly selective».
Sir Peter, chairman of the Sutton Trust which campaigns for social mobility through better access
to higher education for disadvantaged
pupils, said: «
Universities should consider where a student
went to school, their parents» occupation and whether either parent
went to university.
This means that chambers will continue
to choose
pupils who
went to the best
universities, and who can afford
to risk the course.
