Matisse could suggest a whole room with nothing more than a plane of
pure red paint — and now here was another way of doing something similar, of jolting the viewer out of complacency and facing up to the trickery of art and vision.

Cinematographer John Seale, Oscar - nominated here and more recently for Mad Max: Fury Road, uses lighting to

Russian Suprematist artist Kazimir Malevich furthered this flatness by placing flat colorful shapes on
pure white backgrounds in his works, and De Stijl painter Piet Mondrian
painted flat grids in
red, blue, yellow, white, and black.
Bursts of
pure red, yellow, blue, and green echo de Kooning's abstract
paintings of the 1970s, five of which were presented alongside Baselitz's early work in the pivotal exhibition «A New Spirit in
Painting» of 1981 at the Royal Academy in London.
Even in these somber works, however, greys were never

His looser works are almost
pure explorations of colour where the figures in the
paintings are secondary to the swathes of
red, yellow and blue.
(An early announcement in modernism of the inadequacy of easel
painting as a single canvas was Rodchenko's
Pure Red Color,
Pure Yellow Color,
Pure Blue Color, a work that consists of three physically separate canvases.
Looking at these triptychs, one might have thought for a moment of Aleksandr Rodchenko's iconoclastic
Pure Red Color,

Pure Blue Color of 1921, except that where the Russian Constructivist's work was meant to boil down
painting to its primary colors, what the artist called its «logical conclusion,» Levine's wooden panels are invested in
painting's history: The color of each is derived from the digital averaging of the hues in one of Renoir's many zaftig yet jaundiced nudes.
On the margins of the
painting, however, the white is
pure and unadulterated, as there is no
red - green contrast to disturb it.
Comprised almost entirely of aggressive smears of screaming yellow, electric blue, fire - engine
red, and
pure white
paint squeezed straight from the tube, these whiplash images make Impressionism's rapidly dabbed surfaces look like fussy Old Master compositions.

He followed this with a number of exceptionally large
paintings characterized by vibrant
pure colours, such as his series Who's Afraid of
Red, Yellow and Blue (1966 - 8) and the 28 feet x 9 feet Anna's Light (1968).
A
pure grisaille with black
paint and varied gray tones does not lend well to color layers, unless it is completely covered or used purposefully as a stylistic choice (I think of Schindler's List with the girl in the
red coat, or the Take On Me video by Ah - Ha).
The bench also came with that
red distressed edge, so in an attempt to work around that I started off by
