Before discussing
purebred dog registration clubs, it's extremely important to understand the difference between dog breeders.
Even if the certificate is from the American Kennel Club (AKC) or the United Kennel Club (UKC), the largest organizations in the United States for
purebred dog registration, it doesn't mean that the puppy is healthy and well - bred.

Therefore, in most cases, one can surmise but not prove, even with
registration papers, that a
dog is
purebred.
Thus, neither
registration nor lack of
registration proves the
dog is a
purebred.
That is, if you want to know what kinds of breeds are most popular with the kinds of people who purchase AKC registered
dogs (even
purebred shelter
dogs don't have AKC
registration, so it really is pretty much limited to
dog buyers), then this is of interest.
The data from the AKC, the country's only nonprofit
dog registry, comes from paid
registrations by breeders and owners of
purebred dogs, and makes the
dog eligible for AKC events such as
dog shows.
A PAL or ILP
registration shows that in the best judgment of the AKC, your
dog is a
purebred dog of the stated breed.
Purebred Alternative Listing Number (PAL)-- If a
dog is an AKC - recognized breed, but the owner doesn't have their AKC
registration papers, they can apply for a PAL number.
AKC Canine Partners Number — for mixed breed
dogs or a
purebred dogs otherwise not eligible for AKC
registration
As such, it is not accepted for
registration by mainstream registries of
purebred dogs such as the American Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club.
Purebred dogs can be transferred only from an individual owner to another individual owner, so
dogs that enter rescues and shelters are no longer considered registered even if they are turned in with
registration papers.

If you buy a
purebred puppy that you're told is eligible for
registration with the American Kennel Club (AKC) at the time of purchase, you are entitled to receive a
registration application for from the seller that will enable you to register your
dog.

dog as
purebred or to offer one at a lower price without
registration papers.
Purebred registration papers (from one of many kennel clubs or other
dog registries) are only a record of a puppy's parents (and sometimes earlier generations).

purebred, with the
registration papers to prove it, but who behave nothing like a «typical»
dog of their breed.
AKC
registration is not a mark of quality, it is merely proof that the
dog has
purebred parents.

purebred puppies and any other documentation the breeder promised.
