Yes, mixed breeds are guesses by the shelter, but if a
dog is definitely a
purebred, and lets
face it, some
dogs you can definitely tell are
purebreds, then I have no problem labeling the
dog as such.
In The Truth About
Purebred Dogs, I explain about the deformities that have been inflicted on many purebred dogs — tiny size, giant size, pushed - in face, protruding eyes, short legs, long back, floppy lips, long heavy ears, wrinkled folds

All this hopefully helps give an answer to the emotional question about why we train
purebred dogs almost exclusively, rather than shelter
dogs — in short, because it is often impossible to know the trauma histories of shelter
dogs, or which breeding characteristic of the «mixed breed» might prevail when the
dog is
faced with an unfamiliar situation.
Mixed breed
dogs can have the same behavioral (retrieving, herding, swimming, etc.) or physical attributes (flatter
faces, curly hair, short legs, etc.) as
purebred dogs, but as an added bonus they will have more genetic variation.
