For reasons we do not understand, these problems are most severe in
toy and smaller
breeds of
dogs and in
purebred cats.
The Pinny Poo comes from two different
purebred dogs which means he doesn't qualify to join the American Kennel Club (AKC) roster of
purebreds however both of his parent
breeds are long - time members of the coveted club; the Poodle joined AKCs «non-sporting» group in 1887 while the Miniature Pinscher became a member of the «
toy» group back in 1925.
Since it is seen most commonly in
purebred cats (particularly Siamese) and the
toy breeds of
dogs, veterinarians believe that there is a genetic basis as well.
Purebred dogs of AKC
breeds were categorized into one of the seven AKC
breed group designations (n = 65,952): herding (n = 9724), hound (n = 5344), non-sporting (n = 6516), sporting (n = 18,940), terrier (n = 4885),
toy (n = 9798), and working (n = 10,745)(Additional file 1: Table S1).
