Cinema Akil is an independent cinema platform that brings
quality films from around the world to the audiences in Dubai.
It was easily my favourite year for movies overall since I started this blog, because for the first time ever there were so many high
quality films from which to choose that I could genuinely ignore all those awkward early year films that technically count as 2013 movies in the United States.

Of course it would take more than a small independent
film to truly set Washington apart
from the pack, and many saw her performance in the 2001 romantic drama Save the Last Dance as one of the few redeeming
qualities in the otherwise forgettable teen drama.
The Potter
films have never gotten the accolades that Lord of the Rings did, but
from the beginning, I've seen the two fantasy series of comparable
quality.

from real - life, and Hansen - Love accomplishes it repeatedly.

quality film like new works
from Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant) and David O. Russell (Joy) seems to be balanced out by likely critical duds such as yet another Alvin and the Chipmunks
film.

The unfamiliarity wears off swiftly since the
quality of the riffing is superlative here, exhaustively poking a particularly primitive
film pulled
from the overflowing 1970's vault of celluloid shame.
Universal's specialty
films division had a lousy 2014 (in terms of
quality), and rebounded only slightly in 2015, increasing its average Metascore by over 3 points and its percentage of
films with positive reviews
from 25 % to 45 %.
After earning a D — grade
from us in 2012, Roadside rebounded with a huge increase in
film quality, led by stellar scores for documentary Stories We Tell and the Robert Redford vehicle All Is Lost.
Despite some intermittent pacing issues and some horrendous sound
quality problems during the first 30 minutes, the
film delivers on all other fronts, with superb performances
from its excellent ensemble cast (especially protagonist Cliff Curtis) and a nuanced script that tackles its complex story line on multiple levels.
Spectre is a decent Bond
film, and it retains the
qualities of what we expect
from the series, but it's not on the level of greatness we expected given the previous
films.
But, though we graded Lionsgate a «D» in 2015 — a year in which just three of its
films received positive reviews
from critics — the
quality of the studio's output actually appears to be increasing, albeit slightly.
Universal's specialty
films division, Focus Features had a wildly disappointing 2014
from a
quality standpoint (especially compared to its successful 2013), despite the presence of an Oscar best picture nominee (The Theory of Everything).
The movie is on
film stock of such poor
quality, one might be excused for believing it was lifted
from Soviet military surplus supplies circa 1978.
Andy Fickman, whose one
quality credit is Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical [also starring Bell], seems to have no idea how to pace the
film and his transitions
from scene to scene are either too clever by half, or just awkward.
This year's biggest downer — which is not to take away
from the
qualities of the
film — «Amour» represents a change for director Michael Haneke, whose «Funny Games» is a remarkable thriller about the takeover of a household by two psychopathic youths and whose «The White Ribbon» looks at mysterious goings - on in a feudal village in Germany prior to World War I.
The picture and sound
quality is fantastic, as is to be expected
from Criterion, presenting the
film in its original aspect ratio and providing a print which is clean but natural - looking.

Obviously a cold war parable, the
film arguably has as its best
quality its sound design, which finds through an ominous thrum of silence a rattlesnake rattle in the noise the baddies produce once they finally emerge
from their smouldering crater.
Peter Bradshaw: With new offerings
from Audiard, Haneke and Loach, this year's festival will be another feast of
quality film - making.
Presented in widescreen and fullscreen on the same side of a dual - layer DVD, the
film's image lacks depth here — there's a muted, Seventies
quality to Barry Stone's cinematography that no doubt looked smashing on the big screen and probably would've been marginally improved at home by dispensing with the fullscreen version (thus lessening the compromise of compression), which lops a significant amount of visual information
from the right side of the frame (while restoring a negligible amount to the bottom — in one shot literally a pinkie toe).
Pictorially speaking, this is the most accurate small - screen rendering in recent memory — the
film's colour and contrast look exactly as I remember
from the cinema, while there's been no digital compensation for the soft - focus
quality of DP Robert Elswit's images.
Basically everything
from the original
film has been brought back, upgraded with better
quality video (and a drone to boot!)
The Way Way Back may occasionally waver in terms of credibility and originality, but that doesn't stop it
from being a modest crowd - pleasing
film for those viewers just looking for some
quality laughs and bittersweet, heart - felt moments of people who find their own path, however awkwardly, that resonate.
Powell has scored most of Liman's previous
films, which have varied in
quality from The Bourne Identity through to Jumper.
2012 Festival
Films Not everything
from Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW and Cannes have made it to theaters yet, but we can certainly attest to their
quality while we wait for them, and you'll be hearing more
from these
films through us and others throughout the year.
It's not hard to pinpoint where the difference in
quality between the two Vacation
films comes
from; although they have a solid comedy hit under their collective belt (Horrible Bosses), writer / directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein just don't compare to the team of Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters, Caddy Shack) and John Hughes (Ferris Buller, Breakfast Club) working in their heyday.
Virgil's journeys have a picaresque
quality, which can make the
film feel overly precious — look, here's the drunkard figuring himself out, stumbling
from one microcosm of the struggles of his people to another.
The
film signals this nightmarish
quality literally
from the start.
On its own, «MU» is a success because of a smart script, simple, but relatable humor, and its honesty — all
qualities missing
from most other recent animated
films.
And even that, admittedly, stems perhaps more
from the baity media angle it offers, being a collaboration between Palestinian and Israeli directors, than the content or
quality of the
film itself.
Like many big - screen dramas about serious issues, the strengths of the
film come primarily
from the
quality of the acting and the believability of the resolutions.
The first of these marks the most significant gap in
quality from the original
film.
Indeed, seeing how director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is the one calling the shots on Terminator: Genesis - drawing
from a script written by screenwriter / producer Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) and writer / director Patrick Lussier (Dracula 2000, Drive Angry)- it's difficult to gauge just how this
film is shaping up, as far as its artistic
quality goes.
