In a year made of
horror films that have delivered more unintentional laughter than genuine scares, As Above, So Below fits the bill as exactly the kind of low - budget, lower -
quality flick you'd see released on the big screen for the Labor Day weekend.
Instead, the off button is
flicked on the whole body
horror aspect with such flagrant disregard for anything that had come before it that there is no hope of tonal consistency, no dream for
quality as the movie runs itself into the ground.
This year we saw a smorgasbord of
quality low budget
horror flicks, a cornucopia of auteur dramas, and a slew of emerging filmmakers who might shape the future of cinema.
While Ginger Snaps is too uneven to be described as a good film on the whole, those who enjoy teen
horror of today (The Faculty, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the aforementioned Buffy), will probably take readily to this lesser known
flick in the mini-genre, mostly because it sports more
quality in terms of acting, directing and writing.
