While I believe in
eternal security, I still get the
question, «What
about someone who grew up a Christian,
lived as a Christian for years, then quit, denounced Christ, and hasn't followed him since?»

I do not think that asking these sorts of
questions is a good way to do evangelism... I do, however, think that these sorts of
questions are helpful to ask Christians as a way to gain insight into what sorts of ideas and truths people think are essential to the «gospel» and as a way to see what people think
about how to gain or keep
eternal life.
Jesus may very well be the answer, but if you want a good conversation, you may need to clarify what the
question is, because the first
question is not
about eternal life, but
about the nature of reality itself.
