While I definitely agree that his response is great in many circumstances and (without knowing the context
of that conversation) may have been the perfect thing to say at that moment, I think calling this statement «a template that can be used to respond to
questions concerning
sexuality, gender and other important
issues» reduces a very complex
issue down to a very simple response that doesn't really answer any
questions for anyone.
However, the
issue of sexuality, made concrete particularly in the
question of same - sex marriage, is still dangerously confused.
To reduce
issues of sexuality to the
question of whether acts
of sex are or are not fulfilling for those involved is to manifest the assumption
of political liberalism that sex is a private matter.
The film teases the audience with clues and foreboding hints at the causes
of the malaise, but never offers anything concrete or literal, instead creating a rich allegorical framework from which an endless array
of fascinating
questions are raised as to how power may be intermingled with
issues such as history, education, class, family, gender,
sexuality and ultimately the impossibility
of human communication and understanding.
Some
of the major factors that lead to credit - deficiency and create risk are: poverty, pregnancy and parenting,
questioning sexuality, full time work requirements, family
issues leading to homelessness, foster care, inclusion in the criminal justice system, disengagement with traditional education systems, and other similar circumstances.
