question is being answered in many different ways in this generation, but the final

of persons now and throughout life.
My ultimate standard
of moral
judgment is found when I face the
questions: Does this act bring life or does it bring death to the persons involved?
But where
questions are open, there is room for differences
of judgment, including what may turn out to be erroneous
judgments.
Part
of the problem the way the
question is posed is by assuming that we can abstract an ethical ideal from one part
of scripture and use it to judge the actions
of God in another part
of scripture, as though scripture were given us so we could form such dehistoricized abstract ethical
judgments!
While young people may be afraid to share their doubts and
questions in evangelical churches for fear
of judgment and condemnation, they may be just as afraid to share their doubts and
questions in mainline churches because no one seems to be talking about those issues!
If we think
of «theory» as the forming
of generalizations or synoptic
judgments and think
of «practice» as requiring
judgments about particular cases, then inquiry guided by these three types
of questions will always require capacities for doing both.
Judgments a school at least implicitly makes about these three
questions deeply shape its identity and will almost certainly be reflected in the decisions it makes about the content and movement
of its course
of study.
Question: Can we yet turn back the
judgment that we too will die in our own blood where and because we have shed the innocent blood and seized the cherished human heritage
of myriad, uncountable, unsung, powerless, and dispossessed Nabaths — red, black, brown, yellow, and white?
It is not necessary to illustrate this situation here at the beginning
of our reflections with particular examples
of the
questions or proceedings which gave rise to disquiet, since we shall have to go into the matter, as far as is necessary and possible, when forming a
judgment on it.
They follow Muslim jurisprudence in marriage, divorce, and inheritance, but resort to the
judgments of wise men in
questions of war, tribal solidarity, and trade.
It's easy to stand in
judgment of the father in this story, but the
question is how would we have reacted?
This does not mean that the interpreter must become a metaphysician in the sense
of making metaphysical
judgments — although, at some point these become unavoidable and are in fact implicitly at work from the beginning, as in all thought — but rather that he or she is responsible for recognizing the metaphysical
question which the thrust
of the text implies.
The full answer to that
question can only be given by looking at the next two chapters on
judgment and the end
of the world.
The
question is if this is not a revelation
of God's
judgment, at all, then what is it?
While his
judgment about the value
of the accord for the preservation
of catholic life in Europe may be seriously
questioned, he did not support the agreement simply to enhance his own power, as Cornwall implies, but because he felt it was in the best interest
of the church at the time.
As I have argued in these pages and elsewhere, the «presumption,» by detaching the just war way
of thinking from its proper political context» the right use
of sovereign public authority toward the end
of tranquillitas ordinis, or peace» tends to invert the structure
of classic just war analysis and turn it into a thin casuistry, giving priority consideration to necessarily contingent in bello
judgments (proportionality
of means, discrimination or noncombatant immunity) over what were always understood to be the prior ad bellum
questions («prior» in that, inter alia, we can have a greater degree
of moral clarity about them).
When we turn, in the light
of these preaching comments, to pastoral care, the critical
question is whether the attempts to understand and accept, to get inside the other person's frame
of reference, to apprehend and help to clarify the nature
of his specific conflicting feelings, all together imply the absence
of judgment.
The promise
of reward usually clouds the mark's better
judgment just enough for them to suppress
questioning the incredible claims that the conman is making.

of each other's narratives and ask

question, whether thou hast lived in despair or not, whether thou wast in despair in such a way that thou didst not know thou wast in despair, or in such a way that thou didst hiddenly carry this sickness in thine inward parts as thy gnawing secret, carry it under thy heart as the fruit
of a sinful love, or in such a way that thou, a horror to others, didst rave in despair.
A Yes answer to any
of these
questions brought further
questioning as to whether the person responding thought his or her
judgment or impartiality would be clouded by the circumstances.
The
question, how far this or that story may be taken as an accurate account
of what happened on this or that occasion is one upon which
judgments will vary.
The first
question concerns the final
judgment; the other concerns the ultimate correcting
of injustices.
When our contribution is united with and influenced by Jesus» contribution, that
judgment is already positive and remains only a
question of degree.
Yet the persistent tendency
of conservatives to rely on doctrinal tests raises the
question of whether they agree with the Reformers» insistence that the church itself must submit to the
judgment of God and must avoid an imperial and authoritarian stance.
A theology for our day must call our lives into
question by reminding us that God's message
of mercy is also a message
of judgment.
Three issues are
of particular import in the document: the authority
of the authors to render Shari`a
judgments, the scope
of legitimate fighting in Shari`a reasoning, and the
question of legitimate targets.

question of our age is whether people, acting with the spirit, energy, and urgency our collective crisis requires, can develop a democratic global consciousness rooted in authentic local communities.
