Battle Royale was announced, people were
quick to dismiss it as just another Smash Bros. clone; after all, it does feature many of PlayStation's most notable franchise figureheads
battling it out in an
arena - style fighting game.
These boss
battles will feel familiar to those who've played the thousands of party games that have spanned the series: they're
quick, and place the players in an
arena where the focus is much more on beating each other than it is on sinking the boss.
With the insane success — both in terms of popularity and finances — that Dota and League of Legends spawned, you can easily understand why game studios latched onto the multiplayer online
battle arena (MOBA) as a relatively
quick cash grab.
Blizzard Lead Designer Cory Stockton walked us through a
quick demonstration of the system, elaborating that you would choose three pets to fight in the
arena in turn - based
battles.
There is a single player component, but it is remarkably bare bones, offering little motivation to play through as it's nothing but a series of
quick battles against the CPU in limited
arenas, most of which are over before they even really get going.
