I don't know whether it works like this in the US too, but here in South Africa we have 2
kinds of oats:
quick cooking (the cheaper
kind that boils into a mush?)
Use rolled oats or thick cut oats (the
kind that
cook in about 5 minutes) but NOT
quick or instant oats (
cook in 1 minute).
If you still want a crumbly topping, you can use
quick -
cooking oats (perhaps toast them on a dry skillet first for a nuttier flavor) or use any
kind of nuts you have on hand (if you'd like to use nuts at all, that is).

quick -
cooking or anything, so I'm sure they meant the old fashioned
kind.
And while we're specifically talking about strawberry chia jam here, this method works for any
kind of berry or
quick -
cooking fruit — you'll just need to adjust the sweetness as desired (and it can vary from batch to batch).

So, I decided to
cook some Oatmeal instead (not the
quick cooking ones but the regular
kind that you can find in the bulk bins at health food stores) and I ate it with a piece of Ezekiel bread slathered with some Peanut Butter (Yum!).
