I remember how an
afternoon could pass in such a lazy way when I was that gap - toothed kid with sunshine in her hair, a day passing a slow never - ending way of sunshine and wandering, how minutes blurred into
hours, and it was just the way of things, a
quieter mind somehow.
The girls were only allowed out one night a week, and on the Sabbath girls and boys alike were «urged» to attend both Sunday school and church and then, for good measure, to observe a «
quiet hour» from two to three in the
afternoon.
Even where those spaces exist, neighbours complain and the time that kids have to run around and make noise ends up being curtailed to very specific
hours of the day where they won't be disturbing a
quiet breakfast,
afternoon nap,
afternoon coffee and cake, after work drink the garden, etc..
He had just started having a wonderful schedule at home of a five
hour straight sleep pattern in which he wanted it dark and
quiet and we were very concerned that he would want to go to bed for the night when it was only 2 in the
afternoon there, leaving us stranded in our hotel room or with a miserable screaming baby.
This «
quiet time» will eventually stick and, like me, you'll have 2
hours of
quiet every
afternoon!
Although we're flexible on scheduling, we try to stick to a routine that involves swim practice / swimming the am when it's cooler, lunch,
quiet time while the baby naps, and then playdates / indoor arts and craft, library, children's museum, or a little tv / computer in the blazing hot
afternoon hours.
Five - year - olds sleep about 11
hours at night, and
afternoon quiet time is still very beneficial.
Four year olds need eleven and a half
hours at night, and most no longer nap daily, although they do need about forty - five minutes of
quiet time each
afternoon and possibly an occasional nap.
Eventually, they remounted their bikes for a couple more
hours of pedaling, then took an
afternoon nap, followed by a late - day run, followed by a stretching / icing session, followed by a
quiet evening of television, reading or lingering over a huge meal.
