Britton has the most
quietly powerful scene — in which she and Bateman have the kind of emotional honesty that other films of this sort (* cough * August Osage County * cough *) lack, but Hahn and Bateman have a sequence that almost equals it (and is far funnier in an uncomfortable sort of way).

scene as mother and son dance in each other's arms to Soft Cell's «Tainted Love» before a clever jump cut leads us towards a harrowing confession that really pushes the prowess of the proceedings, especially Reynor and Collette's
quietly chaotic heart to heart, a world away from the dish throwing teeth baring savagery of prior
scenes and yet all the more
powerful.
Less famous
scenes, such as when we finally see Kane's political opponent (Ray Collins)
quietly eviscerate Kane with his own sense of pride, is all the more
powerful in the cramped environs of the showgirl's dinky apartment than it is, nowadays, over the phone or in massive meeting rooms.
