And while the storyline, characters and sets could only come from the
quirky imaginations of the Coen brothers, the
film remains critical and engaged with the world we live in — a world where the
little guy struggles to change their own tough situation, let alone the world at large, and the big ones who don't give a damn.

Searchlight will seek to emulate the Sundance - launched success it had in the past with the likes of «Napoleon Dynamite» and «
Little Miss Sunshine» — other movies with
quirky and appealing lead characters — but will need to sell a
film that at heart is far more of a quiet drama than it might appear.

Bolstered by a terrific performance by Pierce Brosnan (After the Sunset, Laws of Attraction), perhaps his best in a feature
film to date, this is a wholly likeable dark comedy full of
quirky but well - rounded characters and
little touches in the character development that sets it apart from other
films of a similar nature.
Little Miss Sunshine feels like a «safe» version of
quirky film, whereby the characters» wacky actions are mere shadows of what could have been.
As a result, they've injected as many
quirky little moments as they can, and the result is the uneven experience of a
film that doesn't know which direction to adhere to.
In that way, the
film often brings to mind Brooklyn author Jonathan Safran Foer's unbearably contrived 9/11 novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, in which a precocious
little boy unlocks a mystery about his father while taking a
quirky tour of Manhattan and its varied people.
Hancock, released 10 years ago, is the
quirkiest film in this lineage; it stars Will Smith and cost $ 150 million to make, and yet it inspires very
little defense or consideration as a display of the potential for black superheroes on the big screen.
