You can not pause the game, and to
quit out of missions you have to use an item that is limited in quantity until later in the story.

We know it can be incredibly frustrating to be playing through a long involved
mission, only to glitch
out in the middle
of a boss battle or near the end
of the level leaving you to
quit and lose all your progress.
I love all
of the little details about the game too, like flipping over tables to create strategic cover; quick warp points so you can instantaneously teleport around the floors and lessen the amount
of backtracking; achievements that actually require dedication and skill to complete; secret areas and side
missions that are well thought
out and integrated with the game mechanics; gear based around classic gaming and pop culture references (for example a light gun that shoots a Duck Hunt duck with the last bullet
of every clip); and since the Supply Drop update, the all - important option to save and
quit between floors.
To avoid such a huge penalty to your DEFCON level, you can
quit out and restart the entire
mission, which gives you a whole new set - up
of randomly generated rooms.
After spending a ton
of time grinding
out missions that weren't fun, I ended up completing the game's first raid once and
quitting.
