And that is
where you start wondering what the
Race mode would feel like.
On the road, Sport
mode is ideal, because throttle response and gearchanges are a fraction less sharp than in
Race, allowing smoother progress in situations
where you can't hold the throttle down all the way for long.
Changes vary from physically violent at full throttle in
Race mode (
where the shifts are claimed to be 30 milliseconds faster than in the GTB) to smooth on part - throttle or in the Wet setting.
It's arguably a
mode best left for the
race circuit,
where the M240i and M2 are concerned.
I did the same thing for
Race Modes,
where I'd switch vehicles while learning each of the tracks.
With that done you get chucked into a few
races in the Red Bull championship, before graduating to the Moto3 class
where the career
mode beings proper.
Circuit
racing and checkpoint
races make up the majority of your time along with stuff like solo time trials and elimination
races, but Gravel does take an intriguing stab at a wholly original game
mode where you have to crash through checkpoints that spin like a slot machine as you approach them; hit a red cross and you get slowed down, hit a green checkmark and you can speed through.
Outside of the career you can embark on any
race you fancy, or you can head online to make use of the standard multiplayer
modes, plus a couple of bonuses in the form of Capture the Flag and a cool take on King of the Hill called King's Rush
where you attempt to avoid getting hit.
Outside of the career
mode you've also got the ingenious named Arcade
mode which is
where you can set up single
races to compete in, should you feel like just jumping in and playing a round or two.
These multiplayer options include three 1v1
modes (ctOS Mobile App Challenge, Online Hacking, and Online Tailing) as well as three challenge options for up to 8 players (the aforementioned Free Roam, Decryption, and
Racing —
where you can
race both vehicles and boats!).
The meat of the game still resides firmly in the Career
mode,
where you begin with one of the lower placed teams and proceed to tackle season after season of
racing, accepting new contracts with better teams and hopefully winning a championship or three in the process.
There are also two multiplayer
modes: Death match which pits each player against everyone else in a standard
race, and Team Mode
where players work together to win a
race.
The latter is a
mode where you'll compete with other racers to make it to the top in a tournament that spans 10
races.
There's a distinct lack of variety in the missions, the few objective type
modes are all incredibly similar, your
race and knockout
modes are exactly the same albeit with a competitor knocked out after each lap, your delivery and assassination
modes are basically the same with different targets, and every
mode has enemies you can bash anyway so even the
race modes feel the same, the only unique
mode is one
where you have to evade the cops, simple and normally a menial task.
Events here include Carnage, a game
mode where the aim is to finish as close to the front as possible while scoring as many points as possible from destroying your opponents and the environment, Beat the Bomb is a check point style
race where you have a bomb on board, and have to hit the next checkpoint before it goes of resetting the timer, Keep the Flag is pretty obvious and finally Stunts.
The multiplayer
mode is
where the lifespan is, get a few friends involved you can easily spend an evening
racing against each other and inventing game
modes such as «cops and robbers» with differently painted vehicles and decals.
This is a
mode where each player runs a straight
race and must swipe the screen to move between lanes and jump to collect coins and avoid obstacles.
There is a time attack
mode where you
race to beat goals for
race times.
Aside from the Career and Instant
Race features there is also a Grand Prix
mode where you can enjoy single
races and customised tournaments.
For the first time too there's an online championship
mode available
where up to 22 people can get involved, a great concept and I can see it being popular with both small groups of friends and some of the
racing leagues out there.
Aside from the original Dr. Mario gameplay
mode where you have to destroy all the viruses, a «Flash»
mode has been included which is essentially a
race against the computer to see who can destroy a number of «flashing» viruses first.
