The 15 - country collaborative study of cancer risk
among radiation workers in the nuclear industry: estimates of radiation - related cancer risks.
Because those who fly on jet airplanes frequently face higher exposure to cosmic radiation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies airline crew members
as radiation workers.
This is consistent with my other sources, the
US radiation worker maximum annual dose is 50 mSv (5 rems).
For one thing, they penetrate commercial airlines, dosing passengers and flight crews so much that pilots are classified as
occupational radiation workers.
The only thing I might add is that Airline Pilots and crew are now
considered RADIATION WORKERS because of the radiation they are exposed to.
The government has increased the allowable dose for workers from 100 milli ¬ sieverts per year to 250 millisieverts per year — five times the annual allowable dose for
US radiation workers — to allow emergency operations to continue.
This has prompted the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) to classify pilots and flight attendants as
occupational radiation workers.
