A dental assistant will not be considered to be positioning, exposing or otherwise making dental x-rays if the dental assistant only performs
radiological procedures in the course of training (or for other educational purposes) and is at all times under the direct supervision of the employer dentist.
Beyond entry level into the profession, most — but not all — states regulate the specific functions a dental assistant is allowed to perform, requiring a certain level of training and experience before the dental assistant will be allowed to perform certain tasks autonomously, particularly those having to do
with radiological procedures.
