Deforestation
of the Amazon is about to reach a threshold beyond which the
region's tropical
rainforest may undergo irreversible changes that transform the landscape into degraded savanna with sparse shrubby plant cover and low biodiversity.
According to the authors, since the 1970s, when studies conducted by Professor Eneas Salati demonstrated that the Amazon generates approximately half

of how much deforestation would be required to degrade the

The remotest parts
of the Amazon
rainforest and the least accessible
regions of deserts might have escaped, but with people moving into ever more isolated parts
of every continent it can only be a matter
of time.
As the forest becomes shorter and its canopy more open, compromising its remarkable resistance to fire, it is clear that drought in tandem with fire could swiftly push the tall, dense
rainforests of the
region towards savanna scrub.
If the damage is severe enough, they say the loss
of rainforest could cause the release

The acai palm is most commonly found in regularly flooded
regions of rainforest and often forms large groves along lowland river edges.
Since trees and fresh berries are restricted by their tropical
rainforest climate, it can be difficult to find raw acai outside
of its native
regions.
Native to the tropical
regions of Peru and Brazil, camu camu thrives in the riverbanks
of the Amazon
rainforest, but it can be adapted to hot subtropical climates.
Guayusa is grown almost exclusively in the upper Amazon
region of Ecuador, where the Andes Mountains meet the Amazon
