Ice shelves are important because they help control glacier flow; removal of ice shelves causes
rapid glacier acceleration and calving.
Similar patterns of ice calving and retreat leading to
rapid glacier acceleration have also been observed in Greenland.

While I was attending a conference on
rapid glacier flow in Vancouver BC in 1986, data were presented that showed no
acceleration of Pine Island
Glacier.
There is a potential difference between the two, in
glacier such as most marine terminating outlet
glaciers, where the
glacier flow is
rapid,
acceleration results from retreat and thinning.
In other regions, warm sub-surface ocean water was shown to be responsible for thinning
glaciers as they went afloat, resulting in
rapid acceleration of a broad area of the
glacier (Pritchard et al. 2009).
Unfortunately, there is risk that this trend will include the sudden
acceleration of various
glaciers into the ocean, which will coincide with
rapid increases in global rates of sea level rise.
According to Holland, this period coincides with the presence of warm water around western Greenland and the
rapid retreat and
acceleration of the Jakobshavn Isbræ
glacier.
