Canvas reached out to me and wanted to see if I wanted to review another one
of their
canvases AND give away $ 100 credit to one
of my readers.
I enter the K.O.S. studio in Chelsea to find a sunlit space crowded with giant
canvases, tables covered with books (Darwin's Origin
of Species, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, H.G. Wells's The Time Machine), ladders with people
reaching out to work at the top
of the
canvas, computers, music blaring, and several individuals kneeling and standing as they fill in and stamp, with various levels
of pressure, hand stamps
of tiny branches over a
canvas covered in a grid
of book pages.
In From Point, Lee's thoughtful and philosophical outlook is transformed on the
canvas, with the inevitable naturalness
of water seeking its own channel, into pulsating rhythms that
reach out to the viewer and communicate a state
of mind.

Complex underlying structures caused the
canvases to bulge or
reach out along the wall or into the room; a sequence
of 12, gradually changing forms was based on the pages
of a calendar from which successive pages had been torn; and finally, in work from 1972, the architectonic quality
of the paintings was discarded in his Kite Paintings, in which unstretched, painted
canvases were suspended from rods and interrupted by cords and threads hanging off and passing through them.
Each painting is born
out of graceful, rapid and spontaneous gestures as the artist instinctively confronts the blank
canvas, adding colors in distinct touches, moving back and forth, finding solutions or renouncing as one brushstroke naturally follows another, gaining in precision until they impart a feeling
of movement that
reaches out beyond the painting.
It finally
reached a point where I called it «blind» painting where it was simply working without the optic, without the visual necessity, and making it more and more physically tangible until finally I tore up the
canvases that I had painted and made
canvases out of my torn up oiled
canvases.
A lot
of people think art is expensive or
out of their
reach, but it can be as easy as framing your children's favorite artwork for a whimsical feel or grabbing a
canvas and some paint and bringing
out your inner artist (like the large abstract hanging in our living room gallery wall!).
