While there are more than 90 advanced nuclear technology and small modular
reactor designs under various stages of development, GEH and ARC Nuclear view sodium fast reactors as being the most mature advanced reactor technology with decades of real operating experience from more than 20 previous reactors.

The AP1000 has received
design certification from the NRC, and the first AP1000
design reactors are currently
under construction in China.
The NRC has begun discussions with Babcock & Wilcox Co. about its proposed mPower modular
reactor design that is currently

reactor designs either currently operating,
under construction, or planned around the world.
The NuScale
design also has unique safety characteristics:
under abnormal conditions, the
reactor can shut itself down and cool itself for indefinite periods without the need for human intervention, water addition or external electricity supplies.

To my mind, the Fukushima failure also builds the case for the kind of push
under way in China, which is moving forward with construction of the first two of a new generation of nuclear
reactors — cooled by helium, not water, and
designed in a way that can not produce a meltdown of the fuel.
(There are other commercial «smaller and sooner» efforts
under way, including a much - touted and much - discussed Lockheed Martin
reactor design.)
The U.S. built a molten salt
reactor in the 1960s at Oak Ridge National Laboratory,
under the tutelage of Alvin Weinberg, who was also a pioneer of uranium civilian nuclear power and who came to favor safer molten salt
designs.
Under the agreement, B&W will provide TerraPower with services and program support, such as:
design and fabrication of components; fuel fabrication process development, prototype fabrication and fuel services;
reactor design engineering;
reactor operations support; engineering services; flow loop testing; licensing support; and materials testing.
There are eight new small modular
reactors on a fast track to generic approval in the US — and more than 45
designs under development globally.
The take home conclusions are 1) Newer
reactor designs should be even better for surviving earthquake and external power outages and 2) It will be hard to
under estimate problems (like flooding) now that the results from
under estimating have been shown.
China has no experience in operating these more advanced models; several of the Generation - III
reactors it has currently
under construction are already facing delays due to post-Fukushima
design changes or supply chain issues.
