In such a silence, if you have turned off the television and tempted your
child away from his games with a good book, you can hear other things: the chatter and call of cardinals who have found the birdseed; the crack of a log in the fire; hot coffee being poured into a cup; the ticking of your

children any sentimental solicitude for the suffering of beasts, and to disabuse them of the least trace of the dangerous fantasy or pathetic fallacy that animals experience anything analogous to human emotions, motives, or needs; they can not really, he insists, know anxiety, grief, regret, or disappointment, and so we should never allow them to divert our sympathies or ethical longings from their proper object.
My
readings over the
last few years have opened up my thoughts about God and His
children — all His
children — and the fact that we all share the same breath and that this (in my opinion) comes from God and links us all to Him.
Although FRED is a four week programme we expect it to instil new
reading habits that can
last for the
child's primary school life and beyond.
