I have a ton of mobipocket books, and if I am not going to be able to
read my mobipocket books on my ebook reader, I'm not going to buy the kindle or buy kindle books, that's for sure.

A company called
Mobipocket used to dominate the mobile book
reading software space on regular old phones and PDAs; but they were bought by Amazon which has its own Kindle software for iPhones now.
I started
reading eBooks on my Nokia phone some years ago when I got an introductory offer for 2 Michael Connelly Novels (Harry Bosch Series) from
Mobipocket (subsequently bought by Amazon in 2005).
MobiPocket books can be
read on desktop platforms, mobile platforms and the Amazon Kindle e-book reader.
EPUB files can be
read by
MobiPocket, Adobe Digital Editions, FBReader, Stanza, the Sony Reader, and many other readers and applications.
Also are there any plans to allow
Mobipocket format so that people with Kindle, PDAs and other Mobi - based ereaders can
read them?
By using third - party programs such as Calibre, unencrypted
Mobipocket books can also be
read on Mac OS X, the iPhone, Android devices and Linux.

The first Kindle could
read unprotected
Mobipocket files (MOBI, PRC), plain text files (TXT), Topaz format books (TPZ) and Amazon's AZW format.

read and add annotations to the book on my PDA but when I went to sync with my computer through
Mobipocket Reader I was not allowed to open the book — said I did not have the credentials to open it.
When I checked it out, I discovered the Mobile Gabriel feature that includes Kindle - friendly
MobiPocket files, including this one for September's
readings.

Via Smashwords Freaks in The City is available in formats that can be
read on pretty much every eReader device imaginable, including mobi for Kindle or the older
MobiPocket Readers.
There are no eReaders that support CHM straight off (out of the main ones)--
MobiPocket Reader can
read CHM and convert it into Mobi (which Kindle supports).
The downloads are DRM - free

They did the same thing with Stanza (a once popular ebook
reading app) and
Mobipocket (a once popular ebook store).
After
reading this article and the comments it is still not clear to me if I will be able to
read PROTECTED files supplied by, for example, libraries on Kindle, such as
MobiPocket's DRM (PRC) or Adobe's DRM (Epub and PDF).

If my current ebooks were DRM free, I could write a script to convert all of them to
Mobipocket and
read them on the Kindle but with the exception of the books from BAEN, most of my titles are protected.

Mobipocket format files.
This is a device that won't
read the 1000 + ebooks that I already own; I can't
read books encrypted for the Kindle on my other devices; Amazon has already abandoned my digital library once — they may be on the way to discontinuing
mobipocket support leaving me with a second set of dead files; the thought of my bookmarks and annotations stored on their servers while they extract statistical data is disquieting; Amazon's clout with publishers and pricing strategies may not leave them open to anti-trust suits but they are having a negative impact on etitles available to me.

I wanted 2 things — the ability to
read my existing

AZW supports DRM (unfortunately) and is built around the
Mobipocket format — though, confusingly, DRM - protected

read on the Kindle, because they're not exactly one and the same.
Mobipocket is a French company that developed its eBook creation and
reading software when eBooks were still in their infancy, and managed to flourish in the nascent market, eventually being purchased by Amazon in 2005.
I use a Toshiba E805 PocketPC with VGA (640x480) to
read books with either EReader.com's free reader or
Mobipocket.
I only get
Mobipocket now if it's a freebie, as I have to strip the DRM and maybe convert it to
read it, since Amazon hasn't yet done a Mobi reader for iPhone, and I suspect they aren't planning, since they think it will raise Kindle sales.
