In one of their most challenging human DNA
projects to date — no British individual this old has ever had their genome
sequenced — the Natural History Museum's ancient DNA lab's Professor Ian Barnes and Dr Selina Brace carried out the first ever full
reading of Cheddar Man's DNA.
Recent and rapid advances in technologies that permit large - scale creation and synthesis («writing») of longer pieces of synthetic DNA, as well as the advent of extremely fast, cheap and accurate
sequencing («
reading») of DNA, have changed our collective thinking about the feasible size and scope of
projects in many labs.
«In our research
project on pediatric leukemia we plan to use Gemcode to define the exact chromosomal breakpoints of large scale chromosomal rearrangements and repetitive
sequences that are typical for leukemic cells, but are difficult to characterize in short
sequence reads,» said Professor Ann - Christine Syvänen, who leads the Molecular Medicine group.
During the pilot phase, the
Project is analysing Illumina short -
read sequence data on 2,512 samples from multiple locations in Africa and Asia, together with laboratory samples for benchmarking and methods development.

sequencing the wheat genome through a combination of Illumina short
read sequencing and long
sequence reads using the new Pacific Biosciences sequencers.
We introduce the concept of a population BWT and use it to store and index the
sequencing reads of 2705 samples from the 1000 Genomes
Project.
The organizers of the
